Dog Days of Summer
I don't know where the expression came from and I don't even know for
sure what it means, but these summer days are called “dog
days.” Just on the face of it, the term sounds, well, difficult.
After all, we usually use the word “dog” to express less
than desirable conditions. People who are “treated like a
dog” are people treated with little respect and “dog
tired” is tired to the bone! So, I guess “dog days”
isn't intended to increase our excitement.
Sometimes, like recently, the days have been hot and difficult. Life
slows down when the thermometer gets above 95 degrees. Yet, for some
reason I haven't been thinking so much about the heat. There are other
things on my mind. Let me tell you about one of my thoughts.
I've come to appreciate anew the strength and joy that has been mine as
a faithful worshipper at Central. I do not recall a single Sunday when
meeting with you in worship has not encouraged my soul. The smiles, the
handshakes and the casual exchange of greetings have been reassuring
and encouraging. As I reflect upon our five years together I know you
have given me strength.
It is also true that from among those who worship here have come some
of my closest friends. When I think about the people I want to spend
time with, I think about you.
I am grateful to have the community called Central in my life. You are a gift from God.
Grace and Peace,
David Reed
