Every year at this time a major event takes place. The dog days of
summer give way to the energy of a new school year. Administrators,
teachers and support staff have already returned to the schools in
anticipation of opening day. Soon this trickle will become a major
movement as students return to the classroom.
For some this late summer event is familiar and to others it is a new
experience. I suspect that to almost all it is a bit scary. Erma
Bombeck is credited with this story about beginning a new school year:
"My name is Donald, and I don’t know anything. I have new
underwear, a loose tooth, and I didn’t sleep last night because
I’m worried. What if a bell rings and a man yells, "Where
do you belong?" and I don’t know? What if the trays in the
cafeteria are too tall for me to reach? What if my tooth comes
out when we have our heads down and are supposed to be quiet? Am I
supposed to bleed quietly? What if I splash water on my name tag
and my name disappears and no one knows who I am?"
Let me wish for all students, teachers, administrators, and support
staff a very successful school year. I assure you of my prayer that the
mind and talents God has given each of you may be developed toward
their full potential.
Grace and Peace,
David
